According to the Forest Engery Corp, pine beetles will likely kill 80-90% of mature lodgepole pines in Colorado. While you can hope this number is exaggerated, the scope of the problem is clear anywhere you drive. However, many point out that it's a natural process, not a catastrophe like some portray it (though it's a 150 year cycle so recovery will take some time). It's unfortunate to see this scarring on the hillsides, but it's also hard to ignore the natural side of this.
