According to the Forest Engery Corp, pine beetles will likely kill 80-90% of mature lodgepole pines in Colorado. While you can hope this number is exaggerated, the scope of the problem is clear anywhere you drive. However, many point out that it's a natural process, not a catastrophe like some portray it (though it's a 150 year cycle so recovery will take some time). It's unfortunate to see this scarring on the hillsides, but it's also hard to ignore the natural side of this. It's just part of living up in the hills (though we should still make every effort to mitigate its effect in our neighborhoods, for the sake of your neighbors). Read more at the Rocky Mountain News.
